Early Christian mariners referred to The Virgin Mary as The Stella Maris, or Mary, Star of the Sea. Medieval sailors identified Polaris, the North Star, as The Stella Maris, whose steady position in the night sky they used for navigation. She was the Star that would guide them home, both literally back to their home port, and metaphorically home to Heaven. The sailors prayed to The Stella Maris for comfort and safety during perilous voyages.
In this work, the figure is nearly in the dark. A light radiates from within, illuminating the star at the center of her being. Projected waves, accompanied by sound, help the viewer to imagine themselves upon the very small ship in the hands of The Stella Maris. She holds us close to her Divine light as she leads us to the true source of that Light.
*The work is best viewed in person, in the darkened space with the light provided.
